47 Key Principles for Guns

Principle 6 - Buying a Gun

To buy a gun in NY State as of this writing Nov. 2022, you have to purchase it from an Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL). This is a person who has a license from the gov't to sell guns.

This can be a gun store, a person with a license, or the internet. In NY state you must get your gun from an FFL so they can do a background check, also known as a 4473 form from the ATF.

Buying online can be confusing. You need to have an FFL to send the gun to. For simplicity, you're better off buying your first gun from a gun store.

The FFLs usually charge you for the gun. I paid $50 for a long gun. I also got it free when I bought a gun online from a store and online from someone else and picked up the 2 guns at the same time.

So places I bought guns online are:
  • Palmetto State Armory
  • Ammunition Depot
  • Bud's Gun shop
  • James Johnson Firearms

You may be limited in the type of gun you can buy based on the state you live in. In NY state you need a license to buy a handgun or a semi-automatic rifle.

Some guns are illegal to own in NY state.
  • Rifle with a detachable magazine cannot have
    • Adjustable buttstock
    • Pistol grip
    • Threaded barrel

A rifle with a fixed magazine has none of these limitations except the magazine is limited to 10 rounds.
